Maynards Wine Gums...a jewel of a find. May 18, 2007
By J. Brockman

I first came across this candy when a friend visited Ireland and brought back a bag as a novelty gift. I've been hooked ever since. Maynards Wine Gums are what candy should really be- sweet without being oversweet and chewy without being sticky or hard. The different flavors are awesome and it's a pleasant change from the ordinary fare offered in most supermarkets.
If you can find these somewhere, I highly recommend you give them a try. You'll love 'em!

The vagrant's wine gums Oct 16, 2010

The company at which I spend a considerable time working has an account at the candy wholesale store in the same industrial zone. All employees go there on a semi-regular basis buying absurdly large quantities of candy and snacks at ridiculously large prices.
All...except me!
When I tried to buy something there, the guys who own the place refused. Apparently, they assumed I was a vagrant, lurking around in the industrial zone with a backpack and a stupid smile on my face. I'm sure that menacing cat I mentioned in another review belongs to whoever is in charge down at that wholesaler!
For that reason, I have to wait until some of my co-workers(who don't look like vagrants, apparently) buy Maynards Wine Gums and decide to share it with their colleagues. Oh, Maynards Wine Gums! Is there a sweeter candy than this, I wonder? Especially the purple and black ones taste deliciously!!!
This Friday, the guys at our warehouse department overdid themselves: marshmallows, chocolate and a *huge* quantity of Maynards wine gums. After I while, they could hardly work! Due to the credit crunch, there's not much work to do anyway... Most of the candy was still around at 5 PM, so guess what I did before I called it a day?
:D
Well, occasionally God is good. Even to vagrants.

God's gift to humanity Jul 19, 2007

Sweet, succulent, chewy, and with that wonderful flavor that can't be described, can't be experienced, can't be understood - without eating a gen-u-wine winegum.

Wine gone bad = vinegar gums. Yuk! May 28, 2011
By Dorbel Tweeter
"Howdy!"
If you are a person who opens a nice bottle of wine, then lets it sit opened at room temperature for a few weeks before drinking it -- and enjoys THAT flavor -- then these are the wine gums for you!
I bought this 2.2 lb bag, based upon the four previous positive reviews, to see whether they might be better than Gustaf's or Haribo's wine gums. Upon opening the bag, I was immediately overwhelmed by their strong, distinctively vinegar odor. Despite that fair warning, I did try to eat some of them. The taste was exactly like the odor - very strong vinegar. Thinking maybe I was just having one of those "bad-taste" days, I tried again on a couple more occasions -- to no avail.
Was it just a bad batch? Well, at the same time, I had purchased three small bags of Maynard's "Sour Wine Gums." But those also had the overpowering vinegar odor and flavor, so the "bad batch" theory failed -- wine gone bad is just the way Maynard's makes 'em.
These are just unbelievably awful wine gums, plain and simple. I am baffled by the positive reviews of this candy.
If you are new to wine gums, I would recommend trying Amazon's Gustaf's Wine Gums, 2.2 Pound Bags (Pack of 3) -- not only are they good wine gums, but you also get three times as much candy (6.6 lbs) for 20% less money ($20 vs $25) - AND with free shipping (Amazon Prime customers)!!!
Since I purchased these from one of Amazon's third-party sellers, I doubt whether I can get a refund, so it looks like I will have to just trash these - and the sour ones - a total waste of $40.46. I wish someone else had reviewed these and mentioned the vinegar aspect so I could have avoided this horrible waste of money.
